Hireboard Communication Standards

How we work together. On a remote team, communication is not a soft skill next to the real work — it is the interface through which all of your work is seen, trusted, and built upon. These are our standards; they are not optional.

The Six Non-Negotiables

Everything on this board expands on these six standards. If you remember nothing else, remember these.

Respond right away on Slack — always. Acknowledging takes seconds, even when the full answer takes longer.

Take breaks when you need them — but ALWAYS set your Slack status with what you're doing and when you'll be back.

Overcommunication is NEVER bad — especially not at first. When in doubt, share the update.

Be vocal about your ideas, and listen to others. People who synthesize other people's ideas together are very valuable.

Ask for clarification and get feedback on your projects early and often.

Communicate in public channels as much as possible. DMs are for personal matters, not work knowledge.

Why This Board Exists

Hireboard engineers work remotely, often across time zones from the teams and clients who depend on them. In that setup, nobody sees you working — they only see what you communicate. Two engineers doing identical work can be perceived completely differently based purely on how they communicate about it.

The good news: unlike raw talent, communication is a set of learnable habits. Every module on this board turns one of our standards into concrete moves — with copy-paste templates you can start using today.
